There are many types of vacuums available, each one depending on your cleaning preferences and needs. We spoke with experts to help simplify your search. They discussed the five types available: upright, stick handheld, robot, canister, and stick vacuums.
This vacuum comes with a separate canister, which houses the motor and receptacle. It also has a long hose that can accommodate interchangeable attachments. Solomon stated that canister vacuums are quieter than upright vacuums and easier to use.
Additionally, canister vacuums have fewer moving parts that upright vacuums. This means that they require less maintenance. Solomon said that they provide great suction and are especially useful for cleaning bare floors. She said that canister vacuums are more difficult to store because of their bulkier base and hose.
Because they are easier to maneuver than canister vacuums, upright vacuums can be great for large areas. Carl Prouty, a tech expert at Abt Electronics, stated that the whole vacuum moves with your body, which makes it easier than canister models, which require you to move the bin around.
Solomon stated that upright vacuums are also good for cleaning carpet and bare floors. This is especially important if you have pets who shed often. She cautioned, however, that upright vacuums tend to be heavier, making them difficult to use on stairs or vertical surfaces such as walls, upholstery, and curtains.
Stick vacuums are lightweight and slim, making them ideal for homes that have limited storage space and quick cleanups. Prouty stated that Cordless models can be easily moved around your home and the battery life is always improving. These models are more suitable for smaller homes because they don’t have the same power as canister vacuums. He said that they are also great for parents who need to clean up after children.
The handheld vacuum, which is similar to a stick vacuum, but smaller and lighter than a stick vacuum, makes it an ideal choice for spot cleaning or vacuuming your car. Our experts said that they are the weakest type of vacuum and should be used in conjunction with a more powerful model such as a canister vacuum or upright vacuum.
Robotic vacuums are a smarter alternative to traditional vacuums. They can run anywhere, even while you’re away. Robotic models can clean under furniture and corners that larger models might not be able. Prouty stated that these are the best options for those on the move, pet owners or people who just like technology.
Robot vacuums are slower than other types of vacuums so they might not be the best choice if you need a quick clean up. Solomon said that a manual vacuum can take between 20 and 30 minutes while a robot vacuum can take as long as 90 minutes. Because these vacuums can move more efficiently if the floor is clean, they need to be cleaned up before using them.
There are many things to consider when buying a vacuum. The cleaning experts that we consulted gave their advice on what to look out for in a vacuum.
Bagged or bagless upright vacuums are available in both bagged and canister models. The difference is in how dirt gets sucked up.
Prouty stated that bagged vacuums do a better job keeping debris and dust contained. However, the bags can only be used once so you will need to buy new bags every now and again. Prouty said that bagged vacuums are better for those with severe allergies because they keep the particles contained.
Bagless vacuums are great for people who don’t want bags to be bought and changed often. These models use a container called a dustbin that collects dirt and debris. Prouty stated that you need to ensure the dust bin is large enough to fit your needs. A small dust bin will mean that you have to empty it more often, making vacuuming your home much more time-consuming.
Solomon said that vacuum size is important if you have limited storage space and live in a cramped area. Solomon noted that weight is also an important consideration for those who are older or have injuries such as a bad back. This can make it more difficult to transport a vacuum upright or canister. Our experts recommended that vacuums that are lightweight and tall enough to be used comfortably should be considered.
You should look for a vacuum capable of cleaning all types of flooring. Different types of carpets require different settings. Dulude stated that it is crucial to choose the right flooring setting in order not to damage or scratch the surface.
Solomon stated that the lowest setting of most vacuums is best for thin or bare floors. The highest setting, however, is ideal for thicker carpets and area rug. Dulude pointed out that a thick, high-pile rug requires a higher setting. However, bare wood floors require a lower setting with no automatic roll brush.
There are many accessories that can be added to different vacuum models to suit your cleaning needs. Solomon says the most popular attachments are the crevice tool and the brush tool. These tools can be used to clean upholstery, cushions, curtains and other small spaces in your home.
Solomon stated that some vacuums can also have pet-friendly attachments. These include upholstery cleaners that collect pet hair and a beater brush that rotates under the vacuum. Solomon explained that this brush is often clogged with pet hair.
Marilee Nelson, an environmental consultant and specialist in building materials, said that the “dirtiest” part of your home could be the invisible air. She said that particles in the air can be a vector for spreading airborne diseases and the main cause of many allergic reactions and respiratory problems. They also carry harmful chemicals called SVOCs, which are carried on dust.
A vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter is a great investment. It will not only reduce dirt and particles on your floors but also improve the quality of the air you inhale. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, vacuums that have at least one High-Efficiency Particulate Arrestance filter (HEPA), can remove 99.7% fine dust and other airborne particles. The filters are sealed and airtight so that all air passing through the machine is passed through them.
Nelson stated that regular vacuuming with a sealed HEPA vacuum seals the deal. This will reduce allergens and dust in the home. A HEPA vacuum can be used to clean dust from any surface including books, furniture, walls and ceilings, lampshades, cars, and stuffed animals.
